The Hocąk people developed some of the first irrigation systems for crops.  Levees (nįį hąną ji hii) were built to hold water (nįį) for the crops to sustain the long hot summer (took).  The Hocąk people are known for their advanced farming skills.  Archeological sites can be located near LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
